The parent company of Onward Beach Resort Onward Kashiyama Co. Ltd. has entered into final negotiations with Talofofo Golf Resort’s parent company for the purchase of the golf course. However local Onward officials are keeping silent on the issue. Toru Iwase general manager for the Onward Beach Resort declined to comment for this story.
According to an employee of the golf course — who declined to be identified — on April 20 staff members were called into a meeting to discuss the turnover of the golf course to the Onward. The employee also said staff were told the date the turnover would take place is June 30.
The employee said that during the meeting golf course officials said the company was bought in March and that all Talofofo Golf Resort staff would be guaranteed a job under Onward management. Employees would be interviewed and then offered a job the employee said. The employee said most of the staff worked for the company for a long time. The employee added that it was not known whether the golf course would close or if it would close temporarily for renovations.
Isao T. Restuvog administration department manager for Talofofo Golf Resort said the employees of the golf course are not sure about the details of the sale and are just waiting for the expected sign-over date of July 1. Restuvog told the Journal that Misawa Homes Co. the parent company for Pricia Inc. which does business as Talofofo Golf Resort has a broker for all its golf courses and that when Talofofo Golf Resort became available Onward Beach Resort’s parent company showed interest.
“This is all being done at the corporate headquarters ” Restuvog said. “Everyone will be offered a job but it might not be at the same compensation or the same job.” Restuvog said he did not know the details of the sale because the broker negotiated the sale at the corporate level. Restuvog said the deal is not final until the agreement is signed on July 1 and until then employees of the golf course would have to wait to see the outcome of the negotiations.
Onward Beach Resort officially opened its doors on Guam on May 23 1992. The hotel’s parent company takes its name from its owner — a famous Japanese clothing designer. Talofofo Golf Resort opened up half of the course in December 1992 and had its official grand opening in April 1993. MBJ
