B&J Video donated a check for $600 to the Edward M. Calvo Foundation on Jan. 19. The money was raised through B&J’s Quarter Dunk Promotion. B&J was able to raise $400 from the game and the remaining $200 was donated by the company.
On Jan. 28 the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Guam granted the wish of Callistro “Cal” Norita from Saipan. Norita wished for a shopping spree on Guam. He flew to Guam on Jan. 17 and stayed at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa courtesy of the Hilton. While on Guam he also shared a few moments with the Chinese dragon which is believed to bring good luck in celebration of the Chinese New Year. Norita’s wish was sponsored by the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa.
Cantate and KGTF-TV12 held a showing of the musical Les Misérables at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa on Jan. 19. The event benefited Cantate and KGTF-TV12 Guam Educational Telecommunications Corporation a non-profit organization. More than $8 000 was raised.
The Mason’s Emon Lodge No. 179 and MDX Amateur Radio Club in Saipan both of which spearhead the NMI Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Community Services Projects held a Trash-A-Thon on Feb. 4. More than 200 JROTC cadet volunteers collected trash along Beach Road from the public beach in San Antonio to Paseo de Marianas in Garapan. The volunteers also painted the parking line and bumpers of the Ada Gym parking lot and cleaned and arranged the American Red Cross warehouse.
On Jan. 19 the Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities donated historic materials to the Northern Marianas College. The items donated include 27 hard volumes of the Compendium of the German Literature on the Mariana Islands and 12 boxes of historical documents of collections from U.S. presidential Libraries by Howard Willens and Deanne Siemer.
TakeCare Health Insurance Co. Inc. donated a $100 000 check to the University of Guam’s nursing program on Jan. 19. The check is the first installment of a $200 000 donation TakeCare makes to the program every year. TakeCare has made these donations for about four years previouly as PacifiCare.
On Jan. 31 Citibank on behalf of the Citigroup Foundation presented a check for $20 000 to Sanctuary Inc. The money will be used to establish three computer based learning centers for emergency shelter transitional living and residential treatment centers.
Lt. Gov. Kaleo S. Moylan; Jessie Palican mayor of Barrigada; June Blas vice mayor of Barrigada; and Nito Blas mayor of Mangilao unveiled a wall featuring life-size baseball cards of members of Guam’s Central-East Little League all-stars. The all-stars won their tournament pool at the 2005 Little League World Series in South Williamsport Pa. MBJ
