GARAPAN Saipan — The Department of Public Works suspended its request for proposals regarding management of the Marpi Landfill.
Jose S. Demapan secretary of the Department of Public Works said the government decided to do so in light of the approximately $60 000 that it was able to save every month in renting equipment to run the landfill.
“We decided we’d just suspend it for awhile. For now we are saving money with just renting and having our own manpower to operate the equipment ” Demapan said. He said a contract to manage the landfill operations costs between $160 000 and $200 000 a month.
Demapan said public works will issue a request for proposals for equipment rental in October. Public works is renting equipment from Pacific Drilling Inc.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial scrapped the government’s five-year $9.9 million contract with Saipan Waste Management JV on March 7 as part of cost-cutting measures.
The company was the only bidder in October 2002 for the landfill management project. It started operations on Feb. 11 2003.
DPW drafted a request for a new landfill management contract in July. MBJ
