PLAIN ENGLISH

Maureen N. Maratita

On March 8 I enjoyed spending time with a group of women that included a number I don’t get to see too often. The occasion was a breakfast forum hosted by the Philippines Consulate General and the Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce at the Pacific Star.

The key note speaker — Rosemary Ong — is the president of the Philippine Retailers Association and also sits on the board of the Philippine Constructors Association.

While she talked about the progress of women in the Philippines in the retail industry, she also talked about patterns among shoppers — for example the growing trend to “BOLO” or browse on-line and buy off-line. …

The Society of Professional Journalists sent me a cheerful email on March 13 to remind me the day was “Thank a Journalist Day.” Unsurprisingly, SPJ’s emails always offer people in the profession plenty to think about. …

In the same email SPJ applauded Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sen. Bob Menendez and Rep. Eric Swalwell for reintroducing the Journalist Protection Act, which “would make it a federal crime to knowingly assault a reporter engaged in the act of newsgathering.”

(We’ll take any protection we can get.) …

I am remembering the late Rex Sorensen, founder of Sorensen Media, who you can learn more about further into the paper if you are reading this outside of our region and did not know him.

Rex and I would discuss the media industry and more when we met. Sometimes that would be in his office in the Bank of Guam building in Agana before SMG moved to Acanta Mall (and I would sit on that incredibly low sofa that he had there). …

Sometimes our publications would ask to interview him. I don’t think it ever occurred to Rex to say no. He was very even-handed, and saw us as a fellow media organization, rather than a rival.

He also understood the practicalities of the business. He said that reporting the news and producing it is not cheap and requires enough people, despite constant changes in technology. …

With his blessing, SPB’s talented on-air personalities have supported the Guam Business Magazine Executive of the Year gala for decades. So have the technical team at Sorensen Media’s Red Dragon Production — a group commitment that helps us to raise funds for the Guam Chapter of the Red Cross, the event beneficiary. …

I would also like to thank the eight nominees for the Guam Business Magazine 2019 Businesswoman of the Year, for taking the plunge and accepting the nomination, despite some breathtakingly busy schedules.

They are Jessica Barrett of Barrett Plumbing, Fran Baumann of Baumann Advertising, Jessica Leon Guerrero of M80 Systems and Island Wines & Spirits, Chen Mak of StayWell Insurance, Caroline Sablan of Bank of Guam, Rose Soledad of IT&E in the Northern Marianas, Cita Tomada of National Car Rental and SureStay Hotel, and Attorney Vanessa Williams.

We’ll be sharing more about them in the coming weeks before the gala on April 27 at the Hyatt. …
