Michael S. Burgess was vice president of business development for Triple J Enterprises Inc.
According to Triple J, Burgess had direct oversight of the wholesale and retail operations in the Northern Mariana Islands and the other islands of Micronesia, as well as serving as a member of the Triple J executive team.
Burgess joined Triple J in 2003.
But his association with Robert H. Jones, CEO and chairman of Triple J; goes back decades.
Burgess came to Guam from North Carolina in the 1970s looking for “opportunity and adventure,” he told Guam Business Magazine. He met Jones, also originally from North Carolinia, who was working with Pay-Less at the time.
Speaking with Guam Business Magazine in October 2004, Burgess said, “Bob hired me as meat category manager for Pay-Less Markets Inc.”
Burgess rose to assistant general manager at Pay-Less and his career also included appointment as Guam country manager for PriceSmart Guam, prior to joining Triple J Enterprises.
He developed his expertise through hard work and experience, though he said in 2004, “I have attended numerous marketing and business courses at [the University of Guam] through the years.”
Burgess gained a great deal of personal satisfaction from his work at Triple J — which included travel to group holdings in the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and the Marshall Islands — and the field of development, which was wide ranging.
In particular, he said he enjoyed the development of “retail marketing growth and retail evolution in some of the more remote areas” he was involved in.
Michael S. Burgess is survived by his wife, Audrey; son Mark; daughter Melinda; and grandchildren. mbj
