Adelup: No B-2 Bombers on Guam; residents warned to beware of cyber attacks

There are no B-2 bombers on Guam and there won’t be any in the near foreseeable future, according to Adelup.

Late Monday night, June 23, Adelup issued a press release saying they have learned more about “Operation Midnight Hammer”, including that news reports of B-2 bombers flying to Guam were actually a fake out “to safeguard troop safety and maintain operational secrecy.”

“… the strike against Iran was executed at the highest levels of the federal government, without local input,” Adelup officials said in the press release.

Citing comments from a Pentagon briefing provided on Sunday evening (ChST) by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, critical details were “known only to an extremely small number of planners and key leaders here in Washington and Tampa.”

On Saturday, media reports quoting unnamed senior officials, suggested several Northrop B-2 Spirit bombers were en route to Guam. Earlier reports didn’t officially connect the B-2 bombers to the operation in Iran but the tie was speculated because B-2s are reportedly the only plane that can carry the payload capable of penetrating underground protected nuclear facilities. However, senior Pentagon and White House officials later said decoys were flown across the Pacific “as a precautionary measure vital to ensure mission success” while the mission-critical B-2 Spirit bombers flew from Missouri to Iran.

Adelup officials reiterated “there is no present threat to the island.” On Friday, June 20, the governor issued a statement calling for prayers and advocating for policies that prioritize peace. (See story: Guam governor calls for prayers, advocates peace as global tensions rise.)

The DHS Summary of the Threat to the United States, reads:
The ongoing Iran conflict is causing a heightened threat environment in the United States. Low-level cyber attacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely, and cyber actors affiliated with the Iranian government may conduct attacks against US networks. Iran also has a long-standing commitment to target US Government officials it views as responsible for the death of an Iranian military commander killed in January 2020. The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland. Multiple recent Homeland terrorist attacks have been motivated by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment, and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict could contribute to US-based individuals plotting additional attacks.

Hagåtña, Guam – As details of “Operation Midnight Hammer” carried out by the Pentagon and the White House emerge, the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration has received confirmation that there are no current plans for B-2 Bombers to come to Guam. This confirmation was received by Rear Admiral Joshua Lasky who provided this information to the Governor following news of the successful operation. Governor Leon Guerrero has and will continue maintaining open communication between local and military partners to prioritize the safety and security of island residents.
As reported by national media, to safeguard troop safety and maintain operational secrecy, the strike against Iran was executed at the highest levels of the federal government, without local input. According to Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine at a Pentagon briefing, critical details were “known only to an extremely small number of planners and key leaders here in Washington and Tampa.” While initial media reports suggested several Northrop B-2 Spirit bombers were en route to Guam as part of the strike, senior Pentagon and White House officials later clarified that mission-critical B-2 Spirit bombers took off from Missouri to Iran. Meanwhile, another group of decoys was flown across the Pacific as a precautionary measure vital to ensure mission success.
Earlier this month and in light of growing geopolitical tensions, the Government of Guam participated in the 2025 Pacific Alert Exercise with nearly all the island’s local, federal, and military partners present to strengthen and improve response time in the event of a missile attack. The event's core focus was based on simulations aimed at creating efficient protocols and strategies crucial for commanding effective communication and ensuring rapid response times during crises.
The safety and security of all our island’s residents, both civilian and military, are of the highest concern to the Leon Guerrero-Tenorio Administration. While there is no present threat to the island, Governor Leon Guerrero urges the public to remain calm and vigilant against the possibility of cyberattacks as retaliation against the United States.
