The Guam Energy Office turned over eight plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to Guam Department of Health and Social Services, Department of Youth Affairs, Department of Public Works, alongside GEO on June 30.
According to Guam Energy Office director Rebecca Respicio, the eight vehicles will aid in assisting agencies to attend to community programs and services, such as during DPW infrastructure assessments. “It’s a good way to give [agencies] the resources that they need and provide some cost savings for the agency, so they’ll be spending less on fuel,” she said. “Our goal is to have fewer emissions on our island.”
The vehicles were funded through federal grants received by the U.S. Department of Energy State Energy Program. Gov. Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero shared during the handover that the vehicles line up with the Leon Guerrro-Tenorio Administration’s mission to provide energy in a climate-friendly way, stating that we need to start moving forward toward sustainability as the island experiences the effects of climate change firsthand such as stronger typhoons. “This is a step in the right direction of our ability as a community to protect our environment and to make sure that we sustain the natural resources that we have here in a much greater way,” she said. mbj
