The 13th annual Pink Ball will be held on Aug. 8 at the Dusit Thani Guam Resort. Proceeds will benefit Guam Cancer Care and the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation.
Leah Beth Naholowaa, chairwoman of the Pink Ball, said that this year’s theme of “Love on ’54: A Disco Celebration” is inspired by theatre and former disco nightclub Studio 54. “Love on ’54 is an ode to Studio 54 so most of the music that you’re going to hear are from that era up until now,” she said.
Tanesha Ross will be returning for her second year as a performer and Okanomodé will be performing for the first time at the gala.
According to the Pink Ball Committee, its members have raised over $443,000 for local cancer organizations. Olynne Rhoads, senior navigator at Guam Cancer Care, said that community support through the Pink Ball emphasizes a shared responsibility to fund cancer screening, promote awareness, help families get answers sooner, catch cancer earlier, and connect people with the services necessary to provide better outcomes.
Jennifer Calvo, president of the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation, said that community support is critical and without support from organizations such as the Pink Ball they would not be able to facilitate financial assistance and support the community. Harvest House has been a Pink Ball beneficiary for the last five years. According to Naholowaa, an increase of cancer patients on island has caused the Pink Ball to prioritize local cancer nonprofits this year. “We would like to channel all the benefits to both Guam Cancer Care and the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation so that they can reach more patients,” she said.
Tickets are on sale for $300 with corporate tables available for $3,000. mbj
