Peter R. Sgro
July 21, 1959 - January 9, 2024
Peter R. Sgro was a Guam attorney and president and chairman of the International Group Inc., a company he founded in 1990 that dealt in management consulting and private equity management.
Among his accomplishments he will be remembered for his service to the community of Guam as chairman of the Guam Hospital Development Forum and the Guam Healthcare and Hospital Development Foundation Inc.
The endeavor to provide Guam with a much-needed private hospital began in 2006 when Sgro developed the idea and began discussions to form a group of board members that represented all sectors of the community in Guam, to include individuals with expertise in different areas of medical services. . The foundation was created in 2007, and had a working capital of $600,000 in donations to begin its work.
Sgro told the Journal in March 2008, “The entire motivation – and it continues to be the motivation – was the experience that I had as a family member of my mother being hospitalized at the Guam Memorial Hospital for three months prior to her death. The service of the physicians and nurses was excellent. However, it was obvious on a daily basis that the lack of supplies, lack of equipment, overcrowded conditions and continued financial issues called for the need for a new hospital facility.”
Sgro understood that the addition of a new hospital to Guam’s medical landscape had broad ramifications.
“This is not just a health care issue. It is an extremely important economic issue that impacts every business on this island and our island economy,” he said in 2008.
Sgro oversaw all aspects of planning and shepherded efforts to bring the hospital into being. Those efforts and numerous meetings and outreach to potential partners to run the hospital resulted in the opening of the Guam Regional Medical City in July 2015. Sgro continued a professional relationship with the hospital, and with members of the board, hosting a luncheon when the foundation’s work was done, and a reunion luncheon in 2022. A prolific communicator, Sgro continued to maintain friendships far and wide.
His efforts to launch a veteran’s facility in Guam were not successful, but Sgo retained a keen interest in medical facilities and their development in Guam.
Sgro was also chairman of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, from terms in 1992 and 2014. During his tenure in 1992 the chamber established the Guam Business Hall of Fame to recognize local business leaders and their contributions. During his second tenure, Catherine S. Castro, president of the chamber, said in a recent communication to chamber members, “He made it a point to be actively engaged with the membership and the various committees. He often met with members of the Guam Young Professionals and the Chamber Business Women’s Network. He was a mentor for many … .”
Sgro’s style as chairman was inclusive, and he would often invite members of the wider community to membership luncheons, to understand the chamber’s motivation and work.
Peter R. Sgro graduated in 1981 from the University of Portland with a bachelor’s in business administration and in 1984 from Notre Dame Law School.
He is survived by his children Christopher Sgro, Matthew Sgro, Katarina Sgro and Maria Sgro and their families, and his siblings Florence Sgro Blas, Anthony P. Sgro, and John T. Sgro and their families. mbj
