On The Road Again

Recent weeks have seen political figures (literally) flying to events in Washington, D.C. and others coming to Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

February has been a particularly busy month.

Rear Adm. Gregory C. Huffman, commander of Task Force-Micronesia; hosted Daniel Ramirez, military legislative assistant and other Congressional staff from the Office of Republican Representative Addison Graves “Joe” Wilson on Feb. 19.

According to a post the same date, “Ramirez and staff traveled to Guam to meet with military leaders and government officials to receive updates on military construction, infrastructure, energy and contingency operations in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility.

Sites the group visited the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system and Task Force Talon and a radar site at Andersen Air Force Base.

Wilson sits on the Armed Forces Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.

President Wesley W. Simina of the Federated States of Micronesia met Feb. 7 with leaders of the FSM state associations in Saipan “reaffirming the administration’s commitment to FSM citizens residing abroad and strengthening ties with overseas communities.” According to a post from his office on Feb. 11, the president committed to participating in the 2025 FSM Independence Day celebration in Saipan, which will be hosted by the FSM Association on Nov. 3.

Semina met with the Chuukese community in Saipan on Feb. 8 and attended “a similar gathering” on Feb. 9 in Guam, meeting on Feb. 10 with officers of the FSM Association in Guam.  During that meeting, “he encouraged the association to formalize its group as a registered non-profit or non-governmental organization, noting that doing so could open up more doors and opportunities for the community.”

Semina also met with Joaquin P.L.G. Cook, CEO and president, and Maria Eugenia H. Leon Guerrero, executive vice president and chief operating officer, both with the Bank of Guam. The meeting was “to discuss ways to improve banking services for the FSM. The discussion focused on enhancing financial accessibility, expanding banking options, and addressing challenges faced by FSM citizens in Guam and across the region,” the president’s office said.

Bank of Guam has branches in all four states of the FSM.

Gov. Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero and Gov. Arnold I. Palacios participated in the 2025 National Governors Association Winter Meeting in D.C. and the Department of Interior’s Interagency Group on Insular Affairs 2025 Plenary Session and both held a series of side meetings, according to releases from their offices on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21.
